Five ways to keep your children happy during a family photo session

Kids can be unpredictable, unruly and camera shy. From fussy newborns, toddlers to teenagers- I always offer these tips as a guide to make sure everyone gets through the session smiling!

Here are just a few ways to keep your children happy during our session.

  1. Choose comfortable clothes: Make sure your child is dressed in comfortable clothes that they feel good in. Clothes that are too tight, itchy or uncomfortable can make your child feel fidgety and unhappy.

  2. Make sure they’re fed, better yet, bring Snacks! We all get hangry so to prevent any grumpy looks on your children’s faces make sure they’ve got a full belly.

  3. Bring their favorite things: Bring some of your child's favorite toys or items to the photoshoot. This can help them feel more comfortable and relaxed during the shoot. Pro tip: if you like the look, bring a little bubble shooter for us to play with! Toddlers LOVE this!

  4. I’m going to be a weirdo– From being an experienced babysitter to becoming a mom I have plenty of games and tricks up my sleeve to get kids of all ages to look, smile, and interact with me. Whether it's saying silly words, making funny faces, or singing goofy songs, I've found that the key is to keep things lighthearted and fun. The best thing you can do as a parent is just keep smiling even if you’re stressed that things aren’t going how you think they should.

  5. Lean into the crazy! While it may seem like everything isn’t working or the kids aren’t cooperating, just lean into the chaos! Some of my favorite photos I’ve captured are in the midst of a kid having a tantrum and the parent pretending too as well. It made everyone, including the fussy kiddo and even me, genuinely laugh.
